I just had a comment from a Swedish NIU rider in my ECU dissection post. It’s about the way your trusty N1s is communicating with the NIU mothership and thus with your App. The part in question is the “The Neoway M590E” – a device which provides connectivity to the GPRS protocol. That’s part of the so-called G2 GSM wireless networks… You might remember the days: MMS, WAP and Nokia being market leader 😉
G2 and G3 networks are about to be switched off soon to add its frequencies to G4 (LTE) and upcoming G5.
That might be sooner than you think… and without GPRS there’s no “phone home” anymore. These are the plans within the EU
- Switzerland: The 2G network was already completely shut down (early 2023).
- Norway: The shutdown has been underway since 2025/2026.
- Iceland: The 2G network was shut down in December 2025.
- Netherlands: A partial shutdown took place at the end of 2025.
- France: The planned shutdown is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
- Germany: Operators Telekom (by the end of June 2028), Vodafone (by September 2028), and Telefónica (starting mid-to-late 2028) will discontinue 2G no later than 2028.
- Sweden: The shutdown is tentatively scheduled for the end of 2027.
- Spain: The planned shutdown is expected by 2027.
- Czech Republic: O2 and T-Mobile are planning a shutdown for mid-2028.
- Austria: The shutdown is expected to begin in 2030.
- United Kingdom (UK): The planned shutdown is not expected to take place until 2033.
As far as I know, Hungary, Croatia, Italy and Greece has no official plans about when they switch off G2/G3.
This means for N1s owners it’s going to be lonely… no more remote-control, tracking etc.
We might be looking into how to replace that specific IC for a more modern one… but then the SIM-card provided by NIU also needs to be enabled to be used in a G4 network.
Nota bene: The NQi is already equipped with G4 (LTE) devices, so no worries there.
